Understand settings on the gadget builder

How the gadget builder works — where to find it and what each setting controls.

The Gadget Builder allows you to convert metrics and data into visualizations for dashboards & reports. There are multiple ways to access the gadget builder:

From dashboards:

  • To create a new gadget: from the dashboard menu click 'Add Visualization' -> 'Create new gadget'

  • To add an existing gadget from the gallery: from the dashboard menu click 'Add Visualization' -> 'Add gadget from gallery

  • To edit an existing gadget: click the gadget menu, then click 'Edit filters'

Settings on the gadget builder

Depending on the Gadget Type you select. the gadget builder will require different inputs. At a minimum you should set a name, description, gadget type & metric.

  • Add metrics - Click 'Add Metric' or 'Create Single-use Metric' to choose from the existing list of metrics or create a new metric local to the gadget

Once a metric is selected you will find some or all of the settings below:

  • Display Name - Enter the name for the metric that you would like to be displayed on the gadget

    In the example below, you can see how the metric 'Empty Miles' has been given the display name 'DH Miles' which is displayed as the column header of the gadget.

  • Sort by - If this toggle is switched on, the entire gadget will be sorted by that metric in the order specified using the options you'll find further down the form

  • Is status flag - Switching on this toggle will display the metric as a tick or a cross. This will only work if the metric is a Boolean value such as 0 or 1.

  • Cell comparison - This dropdown let's you select what comparison value should be displayed on the gadget (delta, percent delta or both). These will display the greens or reds according to the change in the metric.

  • Sort by comparison - This option gives you the choices for sorting by the comparison value.

    In the example below, the gadget has been set to sort by comparison - 'delta asc' which sorts in the ascending order of the change value.

  • Dimensions - Here you can choose the field that you want to group the metric by. Optionally, add a second dimension if you'd like to display the data across 2 dimensions.

    In the example below, the metric 'Empty Miles' is grouped by order 'Customer' and a second dimension 'date' is added to view the number of orders by division across time.

  • Interval - This option is seen when using date as a dimension. It lets you pick whether you'd like to see your data in a weekly or monthly interval. The 'Exclude partial intervals' toggle if switched on will make sure the gadget shows full intervals for the date range selected.
